Covenant Presbyterian Church is led by elders, served by deacons, and supported by a ministry staff.

Session

The name “Presbyterian” is derived from the Greek word for elder (presbuteros). A Presbyterian church is, in essence, elder-led in church governance (1 Timothy 3:1-7; Titus 1:5-9). The elders of the church are called by God and elected by the congregation to serve representatively as the spiritual leaders, or shepherds, of the church. Ordained ministers are teaching elders, and non-ministers are ruling elders. The elders are referred to collectively as the Session.

Diaconate

The name “deacon” is derived from the Greek word diakonos, meaning one who serves, and is observed first in the book of Acts, when the apostles appointed “seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom” to serve mercy ministry needs of the church indiscriminately (Acts 6:1-6). The deacons of the church are qualified men called by God (1 Timothy 3:8-13), elected by the congregation, and actively engaged in serving the practical needs of the church.
